Choosing a mezuzah is about more than finding something that looks beautiful on your doorpost. The case needs to suit your home, fit the scroll you intend to use, withstand its environment, and reflect the style you want to bring into your space.
For Canadians looking to buy a mezuzah online or locally, there are now many choices—from traditional designs to contemporary acrylic mezuzahs, personalized cases and modern interpretations of Israel and Jewish symbolism.
At Laser Ninja, we design and make modern Judaica in Canada, including our Genesis Mezuzah Collection. Here are some of the things worth considering before choosing a mezuzah for your home.
Choosing the Right Mezuzah Size
One of the first things to consider is the size of both the mezuzah case and the scroll that will go inside it.
A mezuzah case needs enough internal space to accommodate the scroll without forcing, folding or damaging it. This becomes particularly important when purchasing a kosher klaf, since handwritten scrolls are available in different sizes.
Our Genesis Collection, for example, includes different case sizes for different applications. Our Classic mezuzahs are approximately 5.9 × 1.18 inches (15 × 3 cm) and can accommodate scrolls up to approximately 12.5 cm, while our smaller designs provide a more compact option for narrower doorposts and smaller spaces.
Before purchasing a case separately from your scroll, always check their dimensions.
Indoor or Outdoor Mezuzah?
Where the mezuzah will be installed matters.
An indoor mezuzah doesn't normally face the same environmental exposure as one installed on an exterior entrance. For an outdoor mezuzah, the case should be made from materials suitable for exposure to changing Canadian weather conditions and should provide appropriate protection for the scroll inside.
Our Genesis Mezuzah cases use a layered acrylic construction with a clear body, decorative face and clear rear cover. The collection was designed for both indoor and outdoor use.
Even with a weather-resistant case, the parchment itself is precious. A kosher klaf should be appropriately protected from moisture and extreme environmental exposure.
Modern or Traditional Mezuzah?
There is no reason a mezuzah case has to feel disconnected from the design of your home.
Traditional materials and styles remain popular, but contemporary Judaica gives homeowners considerably more choice. Clear acrylic, marble-inspired patterns, ocean colors, mirrored elements and minimalist forms can integrate naturally with modern interiors.
Our own Genesis Mezuzah Collection was created around this idea: preserving the unmistakable identity of the mezuzah while approaching the case as a modern piece of Judaica.
For those looking for a stronger connection to Israel, Map of Israel designs can incorporate the shape of Israel directly into the mezuzah's design. Personalized cases can also incorporate family names or names in Hebrew or English.
Mezuzah Case, Printed Scroll or Kosher Klaf?
This is one of the most important distinctions for someone buying their first mezuzah.
The decorative mezuzah case and the scroll inside it are not the same thing.
A kosher mezuzah scroll, commonly referred to as a klaf, is handwritten on parchment by a trained Jewish scribe, or sofer, according to specific requirements of Jewish law. The scroll contains the relevant passages of the Shema.
A printed scroll may visually contain the text, but it is not a kosher klaf.
This is why it's important to look carefully at what is included when comparing mezuzahs online. A beautiful case may be sold by itself, with a decorative printed scroll, or with a kosher handwritten klaf.
At Laser Ninja, customers can choose the option appropriate for them, including purchasing a mezuzah case with a kosher handwritten klaf from Israel.
We'll explore the differences between printed scrolls and kosher klaf in more detail in a separate guide.
Should You Personalize a Mezuzah?
Personalization can turn a mezuzah into a particularly meaningful Jewish gift.
A family name, individual name or other carefully selected personalization can make a mezuzah appropriate for occasions such as a new home, wedding, Bar or Bat Mitzvah, or simply as a gift for someone building a Jewish home.
Laser Ninja offers personalized mezuzahs with names in Hebrew or English, including designs where the personalization becomes part of the physical acrylic construction rather than simply being printed onto the case.
If you're ordering a personalized mezuzah as a gift, check the spelling carefully—particularly with Hebrew names—before submitting the personalization.
Where Can You Buy a Mezuzah in Toronto or Vaughan?
For shoppers searching for a mezuzah in Toronto, Vaughan or elsewhere in the GTA, buying locally can be particularly convenient when you need help selecting the appropriate size, want a personalized product, or need your order relatively quickly.
Laser Ninja is based in Vaughan, Ontario, with local pickup available by arrangement. Our Judaica is primarily available through our online store, allowing customers to browse the complete collection rather than being limited to the inventory available at a physical retail location.
For customers outside the GTA, we ship throughout Canada.
Buying a Mezuzah Online in Canada
Shopping online gives you access to substantially more styles, colors and personalization options, but there are a few details worth checking before ordering:
- Confirm the physical dimensions of the mezuzah case.
- Check the maximum scroll size the case accommodates.
- Determine whether you're purchasing the case only, a printed scroll or a kosher klaf.
- For an exterior entrance, confirm that the case is appropriate for outdoor use.
- Check how the mezuzah attaches to the doorpost.
- When ordering personalization, carefully verify names and spelling before submitting the order.
These details make it much easier to compare mezuzahs based on what you're actually receiving rather than appearance alone.
Finding a Mezuzah That Belongs in Your Home
A mezuzah carries centuries of Jewish tradition, but the case surrounding the scroll can still reflect the home and family it belongs to.
